John Bell Hood was an extraordinary man. From his modest childhood in the rolling hills of old Kentucky to his appointment as commander of the Army of Tennessee at the conclusion of the War for Southern Independence, "Sam," as he was affectingly called by his contemporaries, passed on a rightfully earned, honored heritage.

A tall, dashing, powerful figure, General Hood's commanding presence and inspiring leadership on many a fearful battlefield stirred the troops under his command to such feats of military prowess that today seem inconceivable, if not impossible.

Among the Confederate officers who lived through that terrible war there can hardly be found a more emblematic personality of Southern manhood than John Bell Hood. Those intimately acquainted with him, in victory or defeat, spoke without hesitation of a man of stainless character, wholly devoted to his country, his cause, his army, and after the war, to his friends and family.

For his intense labors, both on and off the battlefield, John Bell Hood has unquestionably earned a well-deserved rest, an honored place in American history along with the dauntless, indefatigable soldiers who tramped the long, lonely miles alongside him.

To perpetuate his honorable legacy for future generations, the John Bell Hood Historical Society has been formed to provide accurate and balanced historical information on the General's life, including his personal family history as well as his esteemed military career.

To all who appreciate the selfless deeds of this chivalrous and principled soldier of America's past, and wish to preserve and protect his honorable legacy in the face of modern historical revisionism and political correctness, we invite you to join the John Bell Hood Historical Society.
